Oceans and Lakes

<p>The ancient shark Megalodon, estimated to have measured up to a giant 13 metres in length, became extinct about 2 million years ago. The only evidence so far of its existence are fossilized teeth - the largest of these 18 cm long! The jaws on display were reconstructed on that basis.</p>

In addition to the range of fascinating animals living in our Aquarium we have dedicated an extensive exhibition to the magic world of ocean life.
An important part of the exhibition explores the realm of sharks - creatures vastly misunderstood by man and therefore highly endangered. Splendidly preserved originals and models of extraordinary quality present a selection of shark species and their phantastic abilities, which have already been imitated successfully in modern technology.
Invertebrates - from the sponges to the spectacular giant clam -, whales, deep sea fishes and the precious coelacanth complete the tour.
Descending into the depths of our own lakes - with an emphasis on the lakes Toplitzsee and Mattsee - we present detailed evidence for their special natural and cultural importance.
