'Haus der Natur' - Nature Museum and Competence Centre
The Haus der Natur (founded in 1924) is the local natural history museum of Salzburg. It houses a large exhibition about all aspects of nature, a Science Center, an aquarium and a reptile-zoo. With our exhibitions we attempt to inspire our visitors, to stimulate their interest in the natural world and to enhance their understanding for natural processes. As a Nature competence centre the Haus der Natur plays an important role in the scientific exploration and documentation of nature in Salzburg.

A special look back in time is on offer in the Haus der Natur at the moment:
The new temporary exhibition „Neanderthals in Europe ... and How We Became Humans" is now open to visitors. It offers exciting insights into the evolutionary history of mankind with particular emphasis on one of its most mysterious eras - that of the Neanderthal.
Who were the first humans and when did they appear on Earth? Who are our ancestors, and who are our closest relations? What led to the extinction of the Neanderthal?
This exhibition is not simply a presentation of fossil bones. It is a very lively account of a crucial event in the history of a Neanderthal community. The Neanderthal boy Orf and his family are the main characters in the story. They can be observed making stone tools and hunting musk oxen, as well as together with their group in their everyday activities and typical community life.
The story does not stop here. You will meet even more distant ancestors face to face and, looking at our colourful portrait gallery, may find that the millions of years of human evolution may well be the most exciting jigsaw that science has ever been trying to put together.
Magic Snow and Glowing Stars in the Haus der Natur
Our highly successful Magic Chemistry Show has been transformed for our visitors to get into the mood for Christmas: Fritz Struber and Christian Kaindl have complemented the popular show by a number of Christmassy experiments: You will experience how to give Christmas decorations a silver coating, use chemical reactions to make glass stars glow and have a look at sparklers sparkling under water. And finally, to make a perfect Christmas atmosphere, a Feuerzangenbowle ("burnt punch") is made in the snow flurry produced by a chemical snow gun. In Advent season, every Tuesday becomes a pre-Christmas highlight!
Schedule: December 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th
