Living animals in the Haus der Natur

<p>One of the most poisonous snakes globally is the green mamba from Africa. In contrast to vipers, which can inject their venom with precision and wait in safety for it to work, the type of teeth in a mamba requires it to bite and remain with the prey for some time, which is dangerous for the snake. A powerful nerve poison shortens the waiting time considerably.</p>

One of the most beautiful aquariums in Central Europe, a reptile zoo of outstanding quality and a whole department dedicated to the biology of insects and arachnids – all of these you find together under one roof in the Haus der Natur!

There are several important reasons for keeping living animals. Our visitors are treated to rare close-up views of native and exotic animals living in habitats modelled to match their natural environment. In this way it is straightforward to learn to appreciate their beauty, their behaviour and needs as well as the requirement to protect them. In addition, scientific studies are carried out in order to find out more about animal biology and the optimum conditions for keeping the animals in our care. This is in turn an essential prerequisite for both the protection and successful breeding of species whose survival in their natural environment is at stake.
